Vision and Mission
Mission
As per the most recent census data, more than 35 percent of India’s population is below the age of 25 and this high youth population will help our Nation grow in all sectors only if they are given a holistic education and understanding of life, emotions and life skills. We propose our ground support to the existing Government run schools that faces enormous challenges in terms of quality and quantity of teachers, knowledge transfer mechanisms ,mindset of rural India parents, children dropping out from schools very early, infrastructure and hygiene to name a few.
Our vision is to reach out to a learning generation not only through books and black-boards but also through learning from nature, social interactions and strong human values. The children should become a lifelong learner.
Areas of operation : Our team aims to help Government run schools implement their advocated curriculum in the right way such that, the essence of learning is achieved. The team aims to work with the school staff to bring in the following:
Spoken English:
The children from rural areas who attend the school in their neighbourhoods are not exposed to the same type of facilities and motivated as the city-bred children. In most of the schools English is taught as any other subject. The importance of English as a communicative tool is not realized. So the existing methods followed at rural schools are not enough to train the students to communicate effectively in English. Due to this, the students from rural area who take up professional courses face a lot of difficulties. Since they have not learnt English as a language, they miss many opportunities. As there is an increase in the ratio of rural students aspiring for professional courses, the above facts should be considered and those students should be trained to meet the need of the hour.
Effective Teaching Methods of English In learning a language concentration should be on four main skills namely Listening Speaking Reading Writing
English teachers and volunteers, especially those who teach rural students need to be very patient and systematic and sympathetic with children coming from rural backgrounds.Teaching will be done from the very basics of letter sounds,2-3-4 letter words, fundamantal grammar, the 5W & H.
Remedial Education : Remedial education, also known as basic skills development, is instruction provided to students who need more support in core areas such as reading and math. These students qualify for remediation because of the gap in their potential and performance in those areas.Remedial education is very different from special education.A child without special needs may also need remedial support sometimes.
It is essential for a remedial teacher to understand thoroughly the strengths and weaknesses of the students so that appropriate teaching approaches can be used to meet their needs. Although these students’ performance is not upto the mark, they are not necessarily limited in abilities or that their attainment will remain permanently low. With proper remedial help, the use of stimulating teaching strategies, and closer supervision and more individual attention, these pupils’ interest in learning will be aroused and they would make better progress.
The ultimate aim of remedial teaching is to help students who have fallen behind to learn to the best of their ability and to bring them back into the mainstream classes as far as possible.
Emotional Management:
Social and emotional abilities are said to be indicators of how well a person adjusts to his or her environment, adapts to change and, ultimately, how successful she or he will be in life.
Developing these core life abilities through social and emotional learning (SEL) is critical to a child’s development, as it directly correlates to success and happiness as an adult. For many children, school is the only place where any deficiencies in these abilities can be addressed before they become active members of society.
Social and emotional skills are what allows children to become better learner, improve on focus and attention, make friends, follow directions, and to be comfortable in a classroom as well as in a society as they grow up. Teaching social and emotional skills can help students to manage their anger, stress and anxiety and become more resilient, which helps deal with the effects of trauma or adverse events in their lives. These positive effects last well beyond a single school year. Some research has even shown that teaching social and emotional skills leads to better academic achievement and improved behavior.
The important 2 emotional management skills that we aim to bring in are ;
Relationship skills : Relationship skills include the ability to get along with other children, make and keep friends, and enjoy playing with others. It is also about empathy and understanding the feelings and emotions of the peer.
Self-regulation : Self-regulation is all about being able to be patient, control strong emotions, and take turns. It is about talking, acting and expressions in a way that doesnt break the harmony in the classroom.
The development of these skills has shown overall positive results, including better academic performance, improved attitudes, behaviors and relationships with peers, as well as deeper connection to school, fewer delinquent acts and reduced emotional distress (student depression, anxiety, stress and social withdrawal).
Problem Solving Project Initiatives: Class 8 onwards
Helping students to be people successful outside the classroom is equally important as teaching the daily curriculum.Problem solving skills do not necessarily develop naturally; they need to be explicitly taught in a way that can be transferred across multiple settings and contexts.
Problem solving projects can be anything related to the classroom, school, home or their general surroundings.Water and hygiene issues at school, littering in the surroundings, helping their parents in a house-hold related small problem can all be part of this session.
Interested children can also make art-from-waste materials or make useful objects using their innovation and creativity.Depending on the age and the interests of the childeren,we will facilitate the problem solving sessions and provide adequate mentoring on the chosen projects. The steps involved in a project are
(a) Students will survey their home, surroundings and school environment and list the issues that they feel can be taken up as a project and worked upon.HEAL will also simultaneously conduct a region survey to understand the day to day issues of the homes from where the students come from.
(b) Students will pick one topic from a shortlist to start with.A synopsis will made by the students as a step by step procedure into the project.
(c) Online and offline learning and resource materials will be made available to the students while they are on the project.Professional mentors will step in as required.
(d) Project can be executed over a term or two depending on the topic chosen.Saturdays will be used for this project work, with prior permission from the Principal and the parents of the students involved.
